The Doctor Paradox

The Doctor Paradox Podcast explores why doctors the world over are increasingly dissatisfied in their jobs but more importantly analyzes the lives of doctors who have carved new and interesting paths to rediscover their passions. Additionally, we interview experts from around the world on topics that shed light on the challenges that are faced by doctors and how to best address them. Each episode tackles the issue of why doctors are unhappy in their work but more importantly, what can be done about it. It will provide you with a framework that you can apply to your own life which will ideally effect the change that is needed to find fulfillment in your work.

Dr Adam Gazzaley is Director of the Gazzaley Lab and Professor of Neuroscience, Physiology and Psychiatry at UCSF. His work as a cognitive researcher has reached international acclaim with publications in Nature, The New York Times, TIME, Discover, WIRED and has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors. He wrote and hosted the PBS documentary 'The Distracted Mind" and continues to do cutting edge research in the area of cognitive neuroscience with a particular interest in how gaming influences cognitive processes. 

Having completed his MD PhD at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, research fellowships at UC Berkeley and now sits on the frontier of neuroscience cognitive gaming research, he has walked an incredibly unique path in medicine. This is an exciting conversation I have wanted to have for a long time and we touch on issues related to the gamification of medicine, meditation neuroscience and if there is a scientific basis to enlightenment.

She is the author of 3 New York Times best sellers and her TEDx talk has been viewed almost 25 million times. She is also the Founder and CEO of The Daring Way and COURAGEworks

This was a conversation I was looking forward to having for quite some time and I believe the issues we discuss are at the very core of physician unhappiness and how we navigate the challenges of being a physician today.

Dr Paul Teirstein is Chief of Cardiology at the Scripps Green Hospital, La Jolla, California. He is a world renowned Interventional Cardiologist and was a pioneer in the early development of coronary stent technologies. He is the holder of 23 patents, all of which have been licensed. Last year, he was awarded one of the most prestigious awards in cardiology, being recipient of the Geoffrey Hartzler, Master Clinical Operator award. Beyond the world of medicine he is an immensely accomplished pilot and an avid salsa dancer. 


This conversation is one of the most enlightening and heart felt conversations I have had and Dr Teirstein is one of those rare minds in medicine. His perspectives and insights are truly brilliant and I know that I will be listening to this conversation again and again.

The founder of and author 'Stop Physician Burnout' he has come face to face with the realities of burnout as a physician on two separate occasions himself. He understands the complexities of physician burnout and how the one suffering burnout is often the last to know. Dr Drummond has coached thousands of physicians through the challenging times of burnout and speaks regularly across the globe to healthcare institutions in need of guidance on addressing this ever growing problem. 

This is Part 2 of a two part series on burnout. Episode 1 focused on the causes and symptoms of burnout and this episode focuses on the strategies to address burnout at an individual and group level. This is truly an eye opening episode jam packed with strategies to beat burnout.
