The Doctor Paradox Podcast explores why doctors the world over are increasingly dissatisfied in their jobs but more importantly analyzes the lives of doctors who have carved new and interesting paths to rediscover their passions. Additionally, we interview experts from around the world on topics that shed light on the challenges that are faced by doctors and how to best address them. Each episode tackles the issue of why doctors are unhappy in their work but more importantly, what can be done about it. It will provide you with a framework that you can apply to your own life which will ideally effect the change that is needed to find fulfillment in your work.

Having originally worked in Healthcare Consulting, he went on to become the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, California. Currently he is the Chief Learning Officer at Practicing Excellence, a physician and healthcare coaching organization based in San Diego.

Dr Adam Gazzaley is Director of the Gazzaley Lab and Professor of Neuroscience, Physiology and Psychiatry at UCSF. His work as a cognitive researcher has reached international acclaim with publications in Nature, The New York Times, TIME, Discover, WIRED and has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors. He wrote and hosted the PBS documentary 'The Distracted Mind" and continues to do cutting edge research in the area of cognitive neuroscience with a particular interest in how gaming influences cognitive processes. 

Having completed his MD PhD at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, research fellowships at UC Berkeley and now sits on the frontier of neuroscience cognitive gaming research, he has walked an incredibly unique path in medicine. This is an exciting conversation I have wanted to have for a long time and we touch on issues related to the gamification of medicine, meditation neuroscience and if there is a scientific basis to enlightenment.

He is a world renowned Interventional Cardiologist and was a pioneer in the early development of coronary stent technologies. He is the holder of 23 patents, all of which have been licensed. Last year, he was awarded one of the most prestigious awards in cardiology, being recipient of the Geoffrey Hartzler, Master Clinical Operator award. Beyond the world of medicine he is an immensely accomplished pilot and an avid salsa dancer.

Dr Bruce Johnson is an extreme physiology researcher at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota whose real laboratories are the extreme environments the world has to offer. He has conducted high altitude physiology research with climbers on Aconcagua in Argentina and free divers in Croatia. He has also conducted high altitude research over two seasons in Antarctica. Recently, as part of a NorthFace and National Geographic expedition to Everest he conducted extreme physiology research with the world renowned climber, Conrad Anker. 

This conversation explores the details of how to integrate the passions you may have outside of your conventional career and use them as an opportunity to do truly exciting things. Dr Johnson's work is an exploration of the extreme physiology of the abnormal in normal environments and the normal in the most abnormal environments.

Dr Ed Coats is a Specialist Registrar/Fellow in Reproductive Medicine in Nottingham, UK but is also an incredibly seasoned adventurer and explorer. As part of a 5 part TV Documentary series for the BBC entitled 'On Thin Ice' he raced to the South Pole with James Cracknell and Ben Fogle. Prior to this he represented Great Britain as a track and field decathlete and also embarked on an epic '30 at 30' challenge which saw him participate in a host of extreme athletic events over the course of a year.

Dr Coats has also appeared on the TV documentary 'North Pole Ice Airport' leading a ski expedition to the North Pole and has also led a series called 'Extreme Classroom' taking children with challenging behavior to engaging learning environments including walking in Africa as part of the 'Hottest Classroom On Earth' episode. 

On this episode we discuss what drives him to pursue such activities as a complement to his career in medicine and how to deal with adversity both in the hostile environments of the Antarctic and in day to day medical practice.

Dr Zubin Damania AKA ZDoggMD is the Founder of Turntable Health, a novel healthcare delivery model in Downtown Las Vegas. Trained as an Internal Medicine physician at Stanford University he also spent time being a stand up comedian which ultimately transformed him into the satirical healthcare star he is today.
